Since the early days of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Jalisa McCullough, a dedicated and experienced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, has been one of our most requested group facilitators for Mental Health Mondays.  She leads transformative group discussions via Zoom, bringing together African Americans from across the globe.  What began as a response to the isolation and uncertainty of the Pandemic, has evolved into a powerful platform for connection, cultural affirmation, and shared growth.

Through her virtual sessions, Jalisa creates a safe, welcoming space where people can engage in open dialogue on topics such as mental wellness, provider discrimination, intergenerational trauma, resilience, and self-care.  Her approach is grounded in compassion, cultural relevance, and a deep respect for the lived experiences of members of the Black community.

“I’ve witnessed how these conversations bring healing, understanding, and unity,” she says. “Virtual spaces allow us to reach beyond borders and build community in ways we never imagined.”

Jalisa talks about the fact that while awareness of mental health needs has improved, post-Pandemic, economic challenges and changing family dynamics have made it harder for families to provide support to those with mental health issues.  She says that deinstitutionalization policies have left many individuals without adequate support, leading to increased homelessness and suffering among those with severe mental illnesses.

Her work has resonated with our Mental Health Monday participants of all ages; she offers  support and manifests empowerment.  As she continues to expand her therapeutic reach, Jalisa believes that virtual facilitation will not be a temporary tool, but it will become a long-term solution for increasing access, fostering dialogue, and strengthening global Black communities.

Through every session, she’s helping redefine what connection and community can look like in the digital age.
