MACRO:
MOBILE ASSISTANCE COMMUNITY RESPONDERS OF OAKLAND
In June 2019, the Oakland City Council included $40,000 in their 2019-2020 budget for the Council to research the feasibility of an alternative to police responses to certain ‘low level’ 911 calls program in Oakland. The Council’s nine-month planning process engaged stakeholders and community members in research and community tables
As a result of the Council’s research and community engagement, the City of Oakland budgeted $1,850,000 for a pilot program to develop a 24-7 mobile response for non-violent emergencies calls dispatched through the 9-1-1 system. The program – MACRO (Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland) - will be the first of its kind in Oakland.
ACT: ANTIOCH CARE TEAM
Following up the Council’s successful MACRO project, in May 2021 the City of Antioch contracted the Council to design a non-police response program for non-violent, non-medical emergency 911-calls in Antioch. In December 2021, the Antioch City Council accepted the Council’s program design for the Antioch Care Team (ACT) pilot program. The ACT program is scheduled to begin in mid-2022 and the Council is helping the City with the program vendor selection and startup process.
