Background on Promise Neighborhoods and Place-Based Initiatives

The Obama administration is currently developing a number of initiatives using a place-based approach that focuses on neighborhood planning, comprehensive services coordination, human capital development and neighborhood revitalization.  Examples of these opportunities include Choice Neighborhoods, the Community-Based Violence Prevention Initiative, the Healthy Communities Initiative, and the Workforce Innovation Partnership.

Promise Neighborhoods, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, is one such initiative, and representatives from City and County agencies, the school district, and local non-profit organizations in Oakland have worked together to try to capture this opportunity for the city. The Department of Education will award $500,000 to in 20 communities across the United States to conduct a one year planning process in order to develop a feasible plan to implement a continuum of solutions that will significantly improve results for children in the community being served.
