Oakland Homicide and Violence Research

Following a spike in homicides in 2002 and 2003 that produced rates higher than any year since 1994, Oakland homicides declined substantially in 2004. Many explanations have been offered regarding the causes of the increase, and subsequent decline, in homicides. To advance community and policymaker understanding of these trends, the Urban Strategies Council is collecting and analyzing data on the characteristics of victims and suspects involved in Oakland homicides,. identifying geographic changes in the homicide patterns, and examining social and economic conditions in which the homicides occurred.

2006 Oakland Homicide Report, January-December, 2006

This is a report on the 148 homicides that took place in Oakland in 2006. This report includes basic statistics on victim demographics, locations and times. It also includes comparisons to homicides in in 2005 and over the 5-year period of 2001-2005 and maps of the locations of the homicides.

Third-Quarter Homicide Report for 2006, January-September, 2006

This is a third-quarter report on homicides in Oakland which have occurred from January 1, 2006 through September 30, 2006. This report includes basic statistics on victim demographics, locations and times. It also includes comparisons to homicides in the same period in 2005 and over the 5-year period of 2001-2005.

This is a mid-year report on homicides in Oakland which have occurred from January to June of 2006. This report includes basic statistics on victim demographics, locations and times. Because many of the investigations are ongoing, there is little information on suspects.

Oakland Citywide Homicide Report for 2005

Urban Strategies Council has released its annual report on Oakland Homicides. The report summarizes changes in specific characteristics of homicides over the past three years, such as victim/suspect demographic characteristics, locations and methods of the crimes and the parole/probation status of victims and suspects.

Oakland Citywide Homicide report for 2002, 2003 and 2004

In February 2005, Urban Strategies Council and InfoOakland released a report detailing the decline in homicides in Oakland between 2003 and 2004. The report contains information on the homicide victims and suspects, as well as the date, time and location of the homicides.
