Health Work Group
Lower San Antonio Collaborative
January 24, 2005
I. Ideas for Strategic Planning session:
- What do we mean by healthy and safe? Think about broad vision and what needs to be done.
- What are the strategies that will bring us closer to this result?
- Every current members should think about who we should bring to the table for this session and how we will outreach to get them there.
- Resurface some of the original strategic thinking around the work group’s work: problem of undocumented people without access to care
- Push back on AECF: Get in touch with the Health Specialist (Dr. ___ ) and utilize TARC resources; let them know that we want a strategy but have population and resource-related issues and need your help.
- Think about a policy piece to our work (fed/state vs. local level)
- Community organizing is another important piece of our work. Which groups in Oakland work on health issues? West Oakland Asthma Coalition, Domestic Violence groups, etc. Find more of these groups. Consider connecting the Promotoras to these groups.
II. Aligning with other work group:
- Health is a broad and important issue and focusing only on ECE population may be too narrow. We should definitely have the conversation with them to see how we can align.
- Health and Safety are also important linkages to the 23 rd Avenue work group.
III. Work Plan Development:
- Carve out a place to talk about strategic planning process
- It’s okay to have more information about our strategy that we have in our plans for implementation.
- Increasing Access to Health Prevention Resources and Health Care: what are the programs and interventions?
- Increasing Access to Resources for Healthy Eating
- We need a forum for adequate and accurate information sharing.
- Drop childhood obesity baseline and target.
- Performance measures exist in three levels: 1) program development; 2) participation measures and how well the participants did; 3) impact – how participants found a way to utilize their skills. We have the first two levels and need the third.
- 5-year Target: Over a period of 5 years, how many leaders do we want exercising community leadership (within the LSAC, the LSA neighborhood, or the city)?
- Baseline: add adult insurance figure; add asterisk for the population of undocumented residents
- It would be useful to have statistics that shed light on how many people have health insurance that covers mental health care. We can ask Sandy about this.
- Timeline: Create an addendum to the work plan that gives: 1) the need for resources to do a ½ day to full day strategic planning session; 2) a broad sense of who we want to have attend (someone from Lai-Bitker’s office, etc) and who we want to facilitate; 3) propose writing up the results into a first-stage strategy (planning, recruiting)
- Let Deb know that we met with Junious on Monday, we are in the process of cleaning up the work plan and that we’ll need the strategic planning process to finalize the work plan and budget
- Junious and Sandy Padilla (USC’s research analyst) will make time to help with data.
